ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon was last night ruing yet another hamstring injury, this time to defender Sam Fisher, and revealed that the club's fitness regime could be to blame.

Fisher left the field in the second quarter against Essendon and did not return. The extent of his injury is not yet known.

In recent years the club has had more than its fair share of hamstring injuries. Lyon said the club's new fitness expert, Peter Mulkearns, had gone over the previous fitness regimes and found that an important ingredient - the "meat and potatoes"component of the humble squat exercise - was missing.

Essendon's Jason Winderlich was a late withdrawal from the match with a hamstring injury while Leroy Jetta will miss the Anzac Day clash with Collingwood due to a groin injury.

Lyon said Fisher's loss was another element of a disappointing day.

"It's a disappointing result, an opportunity missed. A credit to Essendon they out-tackled us by a fair margin, they were cleaner than us in the clinches and their ball use and accuracy was better."

Lyon played down the hard but fair hit on Luke Ball by Dustin Fletcher that left Ball lying on the ground. Ball suffered concussion after a collision with Melbourne's Matthew Whelan in round one.

"It wasn't a great kick to him, was it. He's a tough kid, he's tough as nails. And he was cleared to play, he wasn't concussed. He'll be better for the run," Lyon said.
